Lesson Plan for Rhythm 1 Crotchets and Quavers

1. Give kids the first picture (one per child), which has four crotchets. Ask them how many notes there are (4).
2. Tell them each note means one clap, so we are going to clap 4 times (demonstrate and count 1, 2, 3, 4 at a steady pace, roughly one beat per second.)
3. Give kids the second rhythm and ask them to show you the two notes which are joined together. (These are quavers).
4. Tell them the joined up notes are twice as fast and demonstrate the rhythm (bom ba-ba bom bom).
5. Get them to copy you and then try to do it alone, with you pointing at the rhythm you want.
6. Play track rhythm1a.mp3 and children should hold up the card which represents the rhythm they hear (there are 8 rhythms).
7. Give kids the last rhythm (ba-ba ba-ba bom bom) and demonstrate/let them copy/practise.
8. Mix up the three rhythms and see if they can clap/recognise the right rhythm. Make sure they get to both identify from your clapping, and to clap themselves.
9. Play track rhythm1b.mp3 and award points for each rhythm correctly identified. (There are 10 rhythms).
