Lesson Plan for Musical Instruments 3 - High and Low Instruments

  1. Ask children to stand up. Tell them that when you say "low" they have to do a low action e.g. crouch down on the floor. When you say "high" they do a high action, like jumping up and reaching for the ceiling. Practice this a few times.
  2. Get the children to make low pitched noises as they do the low action, and high pitched noises for high.
  3. Tell children you are going to play them some short pieces of music. If they think the instrument sounds low, they have to do their "low action" and vice versa.
  4. Use your own music selection or try the pre-prepared Youtube playlist below.
  5. Ask children if they know why some musical instruments sound low and others sound high. The answer, without getting too scientific, is that bigger instruments make lower sounds.
  6. Give out the printable worksheet. The children should guess by looking at the pictures whether each instrument is low or high, and circle the correct word. Talk about the pictures as they work.
